Actually Turtuk village where Sabby shot this picture is the second last stop before the Line of Control that demarcates the boundary between India and Pakistan. This village lies north of Srinagar in the Nubra Valley of Leh Ladhak.
The Nubra Valley, at an average altitude of over 10,000 ft , divides the Ladhak range of the Himalayas from the Karakorum range. Most of the valley is a cold desert with very little vegetation, except along the river beds of the Shyok and Nubra which flow through here. The reason Turtuk is so lush green is because it is at a lower altitude and well fed by the Shyok river.
Getting to Nubra itself is an adventure. Taking the road would entail passing through the Khardungla Pass, one of the highest motor able roads in the world. The journey by air from Delhi to Leh passes through the high Himalays…
